Candidates are expected to perform perfectly under artificial pressure, on questions that often bear little resemblance to actual job responsibilities, in a format that systematically disadvantages people with anxiety, language barriers, or limited access to expensive preparation resources.

Meanwhile, the hiring side of the table has access to ATS systems, AI resume screeners, structured interview rubrics, and interview training programs. The information asymmetry is enormous.

Specter is our contribution to rebalancing that asymmetry. We built an invisible AI co-pilot that gives every candidate access to the kind of structured, expert guidance that previously only existed in expensive coaching sessions or privileged peer networks.

The problem with modern interviews

Research consistently shows that unstructured job interviews are poor predictors of actual job performance. Yet they remain the dominant hiring mechanism at even the most sophisticated technology companies. Why? Because they're difficult to replace at scale, and because they're familiar.

The result is a system where performance under artificial pressure — memorizing algorithms, recalling system design patterns, structuring behavioral stories on demand — is treated as a proxy for professional competence.
